Sestola, about seventy kilometers from Modena, is Emilia-Romagna’s most important winter tourist resort and is also known for its beautiful medieval castle.

In front of the church, a fountain depicting a mermaid is located beneath a portico.\n \nRoncoscaglia \nRoncoscaglia is a village near Sestola that is known for its Romanesque-style Oratory of San Biagio. It was once famous for being a leading producer of organs. Today it is a modern tourist town. \n\nVesale \n Vesale is a village in the center of a valley of the same name. The town center is its parish church with a Romanesque-style apse, built where an ancient fortress once stood. Traces of the walls can still be seen. Vesale is known for its food and hospitality, as well as for its treppi, outdoor obstacle courses along which a wooden disc is thrown or bowled in a game called ruzzola. \n\nThe Alpino Esperia Botanical Garden \nThe Alpino Esperia Botanical Garden is an unusual open-air museum located in the village of Passo del Lupo. The Gardens are a nationally important \u201cteaching oasis\u201d focused on local ecology. Apennine wildflowers and introduced alpine species flourish here, and a variety of different natural habitats can be visited along its trails. \n\nMonte Cimone and the Ski Area \nMonte Cimone is the tallest mountain in Modena\u2019s northern Apennines. The Italian Air Force\u2019s meteorological observatory and a research center for the National Research Council are located there. \nThe fascinating Lago della Ninfa (\u201cNymph Lake\u201d) is located on the mountain at a height of 1,500 meters. \n With some fifty kilometers of slopes, Monte Cimone is the area\u2019s largest ski area.
